Biography:
Ivan Vanko, portrayed by Mickey Rourke, appears as Whiplash in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Iron Man 2 (2010). This version of Whiplash is significantly different from the comic book character.
Vanko is a Russian physicist and ex-convict with a grudge against Tony Stark and the Stark family. His father, Anton Vanko, co-created the arc reactor technology with Howard Stark but was later deported to the Soviet Union and disgraced. Ivan believes the Stark family stole his father's work and denied him recognition.
Driven by revenge, Vanko builds his own arc reactor and a powerful weapon consisting of electrified whips, which he uses to attack Stark at the Monaco Grand Prix. Later, with the help of Justin Hammer, he upgrades his technology to create a more advanced armored suit. This advanced suit is known as Whiplash.
Ultimately, Vanko is defeated by Iron Man and War Machine in a climactic battle, during which he detonates his suit, seemingly killing himself.
